The St Johns River Water Management District has completed the project "A PILOT PROJECT TO DETERMINE THE BEST AVAILABLE CORRECTION METHODS FOR NEXRAD RADAR RAINFALL DATA SETS. "
Rainfall estimates from the US National Weather Service WSR-88D (NEXRAD) radar system has many artifacts imbedded into the data stream. Those artifacts which arise from the radar mosaicing, shadowing from buildings and other features, and the radar cone of silence need to be removed if the radar-rainfall datasets are to be utilized over cumulative periods of weeks to decades. The report describes a geostatistical methodology to remove these artifacts from the estimates.
